Read the excerpt below and answer the question.

We would try to imagine them, try to find each other,
To construct peace, to make love, to reconcile
Waking with sleeping, ourselves with each other,
Ourselves with ourselves. We would try by any means
To reach the limits of ourselves, to reach beyond ourselves,
To let go the means, to wake.

The underlined words in this excerpt from Muriel Ruckeyser’s “Poem” suggest a _____ tone.

a. brightly exuberant
b. cautiously optimistic
c. greatly distressed
d. hopelessly depressed

I would say the correct answer is c. greatly distressed. These lines describe desperate attempts to live a normal life, to reinvent its meaning, to try to enjoy it once again and recreate some sense within the terrible predicament. This is not optimism - its a desperate (and vain) attempt to reach for some optimism. It is not depression either - a depressed person doesnt even try.

That is wrong. The answer is b. I just took the quiz on odysseyware and I got it right.
